Perfectly Seamless Tooth Restoration
Individually crafted and custom-fitted, dental crowns are designed to blend seamlessly with the colour and shape of your natural teeth, often lasting over 15 years. These “caps” are placed over teeth that are broken, root canal-treated, stained, decayed, or misshapen. Crowns can also be used to support dental bridges, finish dental implants, or for specific cosmetic improvements.
What’s the Process of Getting a Crown?
Getting a dental crown typically involves two office visits with your dentist.
Here is how we go about it:
Examining and Preparing the Tooth
Your dentist will begin by cleaning and examining your teeth to ensure they are ready for the crown. If the tooth is significantly decayed or broken, the damaged areas will be removed to make space for the crown. This detailed examination is the first step in the process, setting the stage for the crown to effectively protect your tooth from further issues.
Shaping the Crown
If you are replacing a missing tooth with a dental implant, we will take an impression of the implant and the adjacent teeth. Using dental putty, an impression of your teeth will be made to construct your custom porcelain crown. Until your next appointment, you will receive a temporary crown to wear. Our lab will use the impression to create your personalized crown, ensuring a perfect fit.
Placing the Crown
We will start by removing your temporary crown at your second appointment. The permanent crown will then be securely attached using strong dental cement or a hidden screw. Lastly, we will polish the crown and make any needed adjustments to ensure a perfect and comfortable fit.

Your consultation will include an examination of everything from your teeth, gums and soft tissues to the shape and condition of your bite. Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and, most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.
Frequently Asked Questions
The necessity of a crown after a root canal largely depends on the tooth’s location. Incisors and canines, which aren’t primarily used for chewing, often don’t need crowns. However, molars and premolars, which play a key role in chewing, generally require crowns for additional strength and protection.
Crowns provide a single, continuous surface from gumline to gumline, making them highly durable and capable of withstanding much greater force over a longer period. In contrast, fillings can chip or come loose due to the constant pressure from chewing or habitual clenching, especially on teeth with large biting surfaces. This makes crowns a better option for teeth that endure heavy biting and chewing forces.
Dental crowns are designed to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth, being coloured and contoured to match perfectly. Often, people forget which tooth has the crown. Besides their aesthetic purpose, crowns also restore the full function of your tooth, allowing you to chew and close your teeth without any pain or discomfort and without needing to chew on one side of your mouth.
A dental post is a medical-grade rod used to strengthen the base and core of a dental crown. It is cemented into a prepared root canal, unlike a dental implant, which is surgically placed into the jawbone. Dental posts are necessary when there isn’t enough healthy tooth structure left to securely support a crown.
Getting a dental crown involves procedures similar to those for a filling. We ensure your comfort by numbing the area thoroughly and using anesthesia as needed. Afterward, you may experience mild tenderness or sensitivity in the gums around the treated tooth for a brief period. If you have any concerns about discomfort or pain, please don’t hesitate to let us know. We’re here to ensure your visit is as comfortable and pain-free as possible.
Typically, dental crowns can last up to 15 years. With proper maintenance, however, they can often endure for 25-30 years.
Maintaining your dental crown starts with good oral health practices. Regular brushing and flossing are crucial to keeping both the crown and the surrounding gums clean and healthy. Additionally, scheduling routine cleanings and checkups with your dentist helps ensure your overall oral health and the longevity of your crown.
